This little girl is growing and changing! She loves her hair bows and asks for one before we leave the house. She also has quite an obsession for ‘shoe shoes’ and frequently asks where her shoe shoes are. She loves baby dolls, unlike J. She has an interesting relationship with her Pees (pasi) sometimes asking for it but always bringing it to me when she is done unlike unnamed other children in our family who would just toss them aside causing life to be one continuous paci hunt. She loves to tell you and any stranger, passerby, or cashier who will listen about the baby boy who pinched her cheek in the park over a month ago. The story goes something like this, “baby cheek vhoieru vdif iowe (incoherent words) no no baby” at this point the recipient of the story is supposed to tell her how sorry they are and offer a kiss for her cheek as she sticks her cheek out waiting for this sympathy prize. She asks ‘where baba?’ hundreds of times per day but never asks ‘where N or where J’.
She loves to make others laugh and is quite mischievous toward this end. She has a very gentle, tender heart and discipline must be done in the utmost love. She will melt into tears even at a raised voice in her direction. She is a perfect joy and I can’t get enough of her sweet soft cheeks and winsome smile!

May 1, 2012Monarch Miracle
April 29, 2012Our dear friend Mrs. Jean, helped the kids catch a caterpillar so that they could watch him turn into a butterfly. First, he climbed around in his little cage, eating milkweed, the plant of choice for monarch caterpillars. Did you know that milkweed has a bitter taste? Eating a monarch is a mistake that a bird will only make once in his lifetime because of the taste of milkweed. Thus, the monarch is protected from his predator. After crawling around and feasting on milkweed, Stripey (as N and J named him) climbs to the highest point possible, affixes himself to this highest point and makes a J shape with his body. As he sits in his J his body transforms into a green jelly-like substance.
This somehow becomes a beautiful, perfect green chrysalis with tiny dots of gold lining one side. There seems to be no scientific explanation for these gold dots (correct me if I’m wrong) I wonder if they are simply for the pleasure of the Creator. I wish I had a picture of this part! There, the chrysalis hangs for approximately two weeks. Then, suddenly, his chrysalis turns jet black and is somehow transparent. Inside, you can see the markings of the monarch butterfly’s beautiful wings. Once the color change occurs, you know that the butterfly will make his debut into the world sometime within the next 24 hours.
This is the tricky part. Who’s just going to stare at a black thing for 24 hours? On top of this, the exit will only take about 2 minutes, maximum! This is when you add a little prayer. We sat the cage on the center of the living room table. Then we all gathered together and asked God to turn our attention to Stripy when he was about to come out.
Awhile later, N screamed…Mom, he’s hatching!! I don’t know if ‘hatch’ is the proper scientific term but hatch he did! It was the most amazing and beautiful process.
At first, his wings were tiny, his body much larger. He hung on with his legs and attempted to flap his tiny wings. Then, like a magic trick, before our very eyes, his wings began to grow! The liquid in his body chamber was being pumped into his wings!
We took him back over to Mrs. Jean’s house to be released.
Everyone got to hold him and tell him goodbye.
And then, we caught Spikey and did it all over again. He was a different species. We could tell he was going to hatch just before we went out of town for Christmas. So, we took him with us and he ended up hatching on Christmas day! Nothing like adding a little excitement to a family gathering with your own nature episode!
We have learned much through the lives of our little insect friends. Patience, gentleness, diligence to name a few. Most of all, we have learned more of a Creator who is in the business of doing miracles, both big and small!
When I grow up…
April 27, 2012Since marrying J, I have always hoped that we would be one of those couples that looks more and more like one another as we ‘grow up’. I think of an 85 year old man and woman I used to watch dance when I would go to small town country dances with my Grandpa. She was always in the same freshly ironed cotton dress and he was wearing his overalls over a white starched stiff shirt. They had seemingly shrunk with age and were both small, thin and somehow just went together. They matched. You could pick them out of a lineup as husband and wife, no doubt. They would steal the show, spinning around that floor, loving the chance to be in one another’s arms, yet again. They danced in tribute to a long life well lived.
I hope that J and I too will one day be a cute old couple that has begun to even look like one another after the many years spent in each others company. I hope that if we were in a lineup, anyone could easily pick us out as husband and wife for no other reason than we just ‘go together’. Someone once said that in marriage, joys are doubled and burdens are halved. As this math equation repeats throughout our life together, I hope that we too will one day be spinning across the figurative dance floor together celebrating the joys and burdens of a life well lived.
At Christmas, I was at a party when a man walked into the room. He was dressed in a festive manner that caught my eye. And, I immediately knew who his wife was. He walked across the room and took his place beside her, as she offered him some food. I had to smile. I also had to sneak an incognito picture so you too could appreciate this couple who has surely grown to look alike.
Here’s to long marriage…(and flashy Christmas outfits)
Nativity Costumes
April 25, 2012For the past few years, I have wanted my children to have nativity costumes to dress up in at Christmas. I had lofty plans to make them myself but it never happened. This year, I used some gift money to purchase them online. I googled ‘nativity costumes’ and a few options came up. I ended up purchasing most of them from Oriental Trading but purchased few from another site, depending on the cost of each costume. In the end, it was less expensive to buy the ready made costumes verses making them myself. We ended up with Mary, Joseph, three wise men, an angle and a Shepard. It cost about $100. My thinking is that compared to how much many parents spend on their children at Christmas each year, it is worth it to spend this much on costumes that will be the focal point of our preparation each year, reminding them why we celebrate. Thankfully, the individuals who broke into our house just before Christmas and unwrapped our gifts weren’t keen on nativity costumes! I’m so grateful for this gift and I’m looking forward to using these for years to come!
At December’s family movie night, N and J dressed up with their friends while Baba told the Christmas story.
I love this picture of our little Mary, Joseph and Angel praying together!
I look forward to seeing all the ways in which these costumes are used over the years!
J’s First Ballet Recital
April 23, 2012J LOVED her first ballet recital. She was beautiful and so proud of her makeup and costume!
She had such fun giving her friends good luck gifts and waiting backstage with them for her turn to perform.
Afterwards, Baba gave her flowers.
N gave her one too and told her she was the most beautiful girl in the whole entire world.
Nane and Dede came to the show also!
I was one proud Mama that day.
Of course, I was proud of how our little ‘flower’ did on stage. But, something happened that day that I was even more proud of. When the pink flowers mingled with the blue dew drops backstage, some 4 year old trash talk broke out. Flowers couldn’t talk to dew drops, they said. Jenna was a leader. She bridged the gap between the dew drops and the flowers. She went over to the girls in blue and comforted the one who was crying for her mommy. She told another that she was beautiful and asked if they could be friends. Her willingness to step out diffused growing dissension that had begun to take place. Even though she looked beautiful in her makeup and sequins, her desire to promote peace was the most beautiful act of the day! Way to go Jenna, I’m proud of you sweet flower!

April 21, 2012The Nutcracker
April 19, 2012Just before her own ballet recital, J went to the Nutcracker Ballet with some friends from her dance class. They loved dressing up and watching the show. The performance was incredible and I wished I had gone previous years as well. It was so special to have a mother-daughter day!
The moms and their girls.
Sweet 4 year olds!
Thanksgiving
April 13, 2012We were at my parent’s lake house for Thanksgiving. Each year, for as long as I can remember, we celebrate Thanksgiving with our dear family friends. It is quite a crowd as our families continue to grow! One of my sisters also brought some Asian friends which added a fun twist to our holiday. Someone was always playing this Chinese game.
We also drank lots of yummy loose leaf green tea all weekend. They won me over and I still drink this stuff every morning. SO good!
Adventuresome cousins also added a fun twist! I mean, who straps a video camera to their head and jet skis in NOVEMBER!
N and J had their own kind of fun. These kids play in the water at the lake, no matter what time of year it is.

Thanks to amazing aunts who actually boiled water and made a hot bubble bath for N outside, afterwards.
A memory he won’t soon forget!

April 11, 2012The Party of a Lifetime
April 9, 2012All kids love birthday parties. But, I have to say, a superhero inflatable party is the best combination in the universe. This was my favorite party because it was the first time SK acted like a ‘big kid’. She walked in line from room to room with the other kids and did every slide possible!
No fear for the adrenaline junkie!
No one is too old to pretend to be a superhero!
Best friends. Super Woman and Wonder Woman. A perfect match.
SK was loopy by the end. Her head was swimming with sugar, slides and the sheer thrill of being a big kid! You can bet she was asleep in the car on the way home!
