When N was 4, we scored some huge cardboard boxes and I made a pirate ship for his birthday. It was really nice but had a short lifespan because watering the grass is something that is very important to my husband, pirate ship or no pirate ship. (Think Hank on King of the Hill)
I had wanted to make something fun for J when she turned 4 but we had yet to stumble on any more cardboard boxes. I was super excited when a friend called to say she had just opened a new shipment of patio furniture and wondered if we would want the boxes. Princess castle plans began immediately. I admit, the princess castle isn’t nearly as cool as the pirate ship was, but it is portable and can be moved onto the porch so it has had a much longer life. It is such fun to watch something as simple as a cardboard box launch them into endless worlds of creativity and fun!

November 5, 2011Make Your Own Volcano
October 9, 2011When the kids express interest in a certain topic, I try to teach them as much as I can about this, while the interest lasts. For awhile, N was very interested in volcanos. So, we made our own.
We used old play dough and a water bottle. The kids made the volcano and then we filled it with hot water, vinegar and baking soda. The result was a foaming mess of ‘lava’. We re-lived the explosion many times over the next few days until I decided I’d donated enough vinegar to the cause.
This was easy, not too messy and a fun way to learn about chemical reactions. So, if you have a curious scientist, give it a try!
Body Paint
August 5, 2011N and J love to paint themselves. In the past, I have let them use tempera paint and then just play outside in the water to wash it off. Sometimes they paint themselves and sometimes they want me to paint them. This summer, we learned from my cousin to mix equal parts lotion and paint for the paint to go on better without drying and cracking. This also works well as face paint. So, if you need a summer activity there’s still time for body paint!

July 31, 2011Shaving Cream Fun
May 9, 2011My mom visited a few weeks ago and brought each kid their own canister of shaving cream, to be used however they wanted.
This provided much more fun than I anticipated. It didn’t burn their eyes as I had expected and the fun went on and on, until the containers ran out.
Ernie didn’t know what to think of it all and kept a safe distance!
Colored Rice
April 29, 2011I recently saw this craft on another blog. You are so amazingly creative L Pad! We had to try it for ourselves.
Put two tablespoons of vinegar in a ziplock bag along with a few drops of food coloring. Then, add 2 cups of rice. Seal the bag shut and mix the rice around until it is fully colored.
Let me just say that kids are generally pretty enthusiastic about the shaking part. Ahem. If you fail to zip a bag all the way closed, you might just end up with purple rice and food coloring all over the counter and your daughter’s outfit!
Next, pour the rice onto a wax paper lined tray or two.
Next, you can either put the rice in the oven at 150 until dry or set it outside for a few hours on a sunny day.
The rice feels so good in your hands!
Even SK loves to play.
SK’s Pool
April 26, 2011Lately, I’ve been putting SK in the pool in the backyard without any water in it so that she can play without having to worry about her eating bugs or grass. I can work in the yard and the other two can run around and she can be part of the fun. Is this dangerous? I can’t think of why it would be, but it still seems a little strange!
Monogramed Towels
December 2, 2010This fall, I have made monogramed towels for birthday presents. This has been a fun creative outlet although it wasn’t quite the time saver I had planned on. The whole idea came about when I needed to run to the store to buy a last minute birthday gift. There’s no running to the store with three kids; everything is an ordeal. So, I thought it would be a good idea to buy the supplies to make the same gift for all our friends fall birthdays. This way, I could work on them whenever I wanted not make multiple trips to the store.
Somehow though, I always waited until the night before the party to complete my project. I usually ran out of something and ended up borrowing thread from a neighbor, making a late night run to Wal-Mart or showing up at the party with the promise of a gift delivery the following week. I enjoyed this fall’s towel craft but all good things must come to an end!

November 18, 2010Camping Crafts
November 11, 2010On our camping trip, a few weeks ago, my friend and I each planned some crafts for our kids. She bought small bags and personalized them with an initial. The kids could stuff their treasures inside their bags. They took them on our hike, gathered rocks, sweet gum balls, pine needles, and sand. The bags were a great idea and we were both glad she had picked the small size!
No trip is complete without a plaster of paris craft so we had the kids collect treasures in their little bags. Then we dug a hole for each of them to lay their treasured in. Then we poured plaster of paris over their creations to make these mementos to take home and remember the trip.
We also made family signs to hang at the front of our campsites. We looped string through cardboard to hang the sign on a post or tree. The kids decorated them with markers and glued treasures from nature around the edges. In case we couldn’t identify our own tent or car, we could always look at the sign and find our camp site!
This last picture has nothing to do with a craft but I have to post it in jest for my husband who LOVES his new I phone. Whatever happened to peace, quite and leaving technology behind on a camping trip? He does have an app that allows you to hold the phone up to the sky and it will show you what constellation you are looking at. Pretty cool. I guess we’ll bring you on our next camping trip, I phone, as long as you keep quiet most of the time!
