Running to catch up

March 31, 2010

I know I’ve been slacking in the blogging area over the past few days! We have been busy lately and I just can’t seem to get my energy back. I’m just barely keeping up right now.

Yesterday was pirates and princesses day at Chick-Fil-A, or so I thought. Anyone dressed like a pirated or princess gets a free meal. I was surprised the parking lot was so empty. Pirate and Princess day is tomorrow. N was decked out in pirate pants, hat, patch, and hook. J was Cinderella and I was just extremely thankful that I hadn’t worn a tierra myself in attempt to score 3 free meals instead of just two! It worked out ok though, they felt sorry for us and gave us the free meals anyway. N and J didn’t seem to notice that they were the only ones dressed up, we didn’t have to fight the hoards of pirates and princesses for a table  and I didn’t have to cook dinner!

When we arrived at Chick-Fil-A to be solo pirate and princess family, I had just left the YMCA where the swim suit drying machine shredded my maternity swim suit bottoms. Not something you can just run out and replace. I think it will require buying a whole new suit. This is especially disheartening because the machine already tore a hole in my top, which I replaced with another one that matched the old bottoms. Now, no bottoms, no way to swim until I find new ones and these things can’t be sewn back up! I won’t be stupid enough to use the machine a third time.

There are always still things worth smiling about. On the way home, N asked me if Jesus was giving his body and his blood for his disciples to drink today or not. It took me awhile to compute the question but, he had learned at school that this preceded Jesus dying so he thought it might have been today. I love getting to answer those questions!

They were watching their Charlie Brown Easter video just before bed while I was ironing in the other room. I overheard J say, “Hey, let’s pray. Dear God, I ask that those kids aren’t mean to Charlie Brown any more . Amen.” I decided to save the ‘why we don’t pray for characters on TV’ conversation for another day.

That is enough rambling. I’ll try to post pictures from spring break sometime this week and then be back to being more consistently next week.

Unusual Laws Around the World- Part 2

March 30, 2010

Welcome to another installment of unusual laws from our community newsletter. These are worldwide. Don’t use this as a vacation guide!

*It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside down.

*In London, it is illegal to flag down a taxi if you have the plague.

*In London, Freemen are allowed to take a flock of sheep across London Bridge without being charged a toll; they are also allowed to drive geese down Cheapside.

*In England, all men over the age of 14 must carry out two hours of longbow practice a day.

*In the city of York, it is legal to murder a Scotsman withing the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow.

Resurrection Cookies

March 26, 2010

I wanted to post this recipe before next week so there would be time to go buy the ingredients should you want to do this. It is a great hands on way to teach small children about Easter, if you do it right. Last year, I somehow bought cooking wine instead of vinegar, without ever noticing. We dyed eggs in cooking wine (didn’t work too well) and made the resurrection cookies with wine instead of vinegar. They are supposed to rise over night in the oven and look like an empty tomb on Easter morning. We had a special time with N that Saturday night, making them after J went to bed. We read scripture together and told him the Easter story. He taped the oven (tomb) shut and went to bed. With anticipation, he ran to the oven on Easter morning, only to find gooey blobs on the cookie sheet. While we were trying to think of something to say in attempt to recover the not so teachable moment, he asked, “Mom, is Jesus in the oven?” Better luck this year and if you make them, make sure you buy vinegar instead of cooking wine :)

Annie’s “Resurrection Cookies”
~Also known as Easter Story Cookies~

This is a great recipe to teach your Children the REAL story of Easter. That the Lord Jesus Christ
our Savior is not dead but has Risen. We serve a Risen Savior……

This activity can be done as a “family” or for Sunday School. Of course the Sunday School option might
be to hand it out to the class with a note to the parents. Grandparents might considering
doing this with their grandchildren this year too!!!

So Grab your Apron and Let’s Get Started!!!!!!!

You will need:
1 cup whole pecans
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
a pinch salt
1 cup sugar
a zipper baggy
1 wooden spoon
scotch tape
Bible

Instructions:
These are to be made the evening before Easter.  Preheat oven to 300F.
*** (this is very important — don’t wait until you are half done with the recipe).
Place pecans in zipper baggy and let children beat them with the wooden spoon
to break into small pieces.  Explain that after Jesus was arrested.  He
was beaten by the Roman soldiers.  Read: John 19:1-3

Let each child smell the vinegar.  Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl.
Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar
to drink. Read: John 19:28-30

Add egg whites to vinegar.  Eggs represent life.  Explain that Jesus gave His life
to give us life. Read: John 10:10&11

Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand.  Let them taste it and brush the rest
into the bowl.  Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers,
and the bitterness of our own sin. Read: Luke 23:27

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing.  Add 1 cup sugar.  Explain that the
sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us.  He wants us to
know and belong to Him. Read: Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.
Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins
have been cleansed by Jesus. Read: Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3

Fold in broken nuts.  Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet.
Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid.
Read: Matthew 27:57-60

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.

Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door.
Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read: Matthew 27:65-66

GO TO BED!

Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.
Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read: John 16:20&22

On Resurrection Sunday (Easter) morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie.  Notice the cracked
surface and take a bite.  The cookies are hollow!  On the first Easter Jesus’ followers were amazed
to find the tomb open and empty. Read: Matthew 28:1-9

~Source for these cookies is unknown. Thank you Sue for sending it to me so that I could share it with others!!!~

Rainbow Cupcakes

March 25, 2010

Tomorrow is N’s unbirthday at school. This is a creative preschool teacher way to celebrate the kids who have summer birthdays. Great idea. That’s why I’m not a preschool teacher. N has been counting down the days until his unbirthday. Today we finally got to make the cupcakes together. We saw these in Family Fun magazine and he wanted to try them.

Would You Eat This?

March 23, 2010

N and J have some wierd food preferences. I try not to influence them since they are eating healthy.

Would you eat…

Cucumbers dipped in peanut butter?

Broccoli dipped in strawberry yogurt?

Raw green onions?

The onions started out ok but didn’t end so well…

Marriage Retreat

March 22, 2010

Last weekend, our home group had a marriage retreat. It never occurred to us to take a group picture.

We picnicked.

Fished. J was the only one who caught anything.

Fried fish, thanks to Mark the fish fry expert!

Liz was the only girl to wake board. Way to go!

Roasted marshmallows.

Went on a few boat rides.

And watched lots of marriage videos. Marriage videos are good. Marriage videos combined with many small children? Not the best scenario. You live and learn. But, the videos by Eggerichs on love and respect are exceptional!

Women in Turkey

March 19, 2010

I recently read an article in Zaman, a Turkish newspaper, about violence among women in Turkey. I was shocked by these statistics. May this inspire us all to be more aware of what goes on outside of our personal realm of comfort!

Here are a few quotes, if you don’t want to click on the full article above:

“A United Nations Turkey report released yesterday put forward that almost half of the country’s female population has been subject to sexual and physical violence at the hands of their husbands. It also noted that there are only 52 women’s shelters in Turkey despite a female population of 35 million.”

“Scientific research carried out at a number of universities also supports the UN Turkey report on violence against women in Turkey while revealing that a noticeable part of women exposed to violence put the blame on themselves.”

“Research conducted by Erciyes University in Kayseri involving 355 women revealed that 52.1 percent responded that there are situations in which women deserve violence. A total of 49.9 percent of the women surveyed said they were exposed to violence and 38.6 said they were guilty. Furthermore, 46.1 percent of the women said they would do nothing and accept the situation if they were subjected to violence.”

“Research by Gülşah Deniz and Serap Selver Babacan, both of whom are affiliated with the Fethiye State Hospital in Muğla, showed that 42 percent of women are exposed to physical domestic violence while 68.7 stay married for the sake of their children. Also, 58 percent of the respondents say the marriage should continue if the violence does not amount to torture.”

“A study on domestic violence toward women carried out in Denizli province discovered that 43 percent of women who are exposed to violence suffer from violent incidents once a week while 29 percent are subject to violence every day.”
