When I picked up N at school a couple of weeks ago, the first thing he said was, “I told my teacher we have a cat named Ella.” We in fact, do not have a cat named Ella. His voice was matter of fact but at the same time a little remorseful. He curiously awaited my response. I tried to probe a little to figure out why he had said this and the best I could come up with was he just wished he had a cat. That’s fair. So, I gave him the speech about truthful words, who the father of lies is, the character of his heavenly father etc. Of course, I also threw in how much I dislike cats so that he didn’t develop a false hope of ever getting one. I felt sure that was the end of Ella.
This week, I went to his very cute and creative school Thanksgiving party. I’m so sorry I didn’t have my camera to take pictures of these kids in their Indian feathered hats with balloons on their chairs and bright place mats all sitting in a row eating their Thanksgiving dinner of maccaroni, chicken nuggets, fruit salad and cookies. It wasn’t until N put his plate in the trash that I was able to fully appreciate his place mat. Listed was each member of our family, the things for which he was most thankful. And yes, there on the laminated place mat was our cat named Ella.
